FAQ's
What service does NourishTT provide to businesses?
NourishTT provides businesses with an efficient and responsible way to donate surplus food to the underprivileged. This includes perfectly good food that cannot be sold due to reasons such as short shelf life, surplus inventory, or minor packaging damage.
In addition to food donations, we prepare and cook nutritious meals using these surplus ingredients and deliver them to the homeless every Sunday. This initiative ensures that those in need receive warm, healthy meals while reducing food waste and fostering community support.
Does NourishTT Collect the food?
NourishTT can collect surplus food directly from distributors, ensuring it reaches those in need efficiently. However, we strongly encourage distributors to consider adding us to their delivery routes. This small adjustment helps us save on transportation costs—funds that can instead be used to feed a family or address other urgent community needs. Together, we can maximize impact while reducing food waste.
Where does the food go?
NourishTT delivers food directly to at-risk families:
-
Single Parents
-
Pregnant teenagers who are required to leave the home
-
A family with 1 or more cases of mental illness
-
A family with 1 or more cases of physical illness
-
Previously incarcerated women who are now fully rehabilitated
-
Violence Abuse-related issues that require 1 parent and children to leave the home or the abusive partner (breadwinner leaves the home)
-
Drug Abuse that requires 1 parent and children to leave the home or the drug-abusing partner (breadwinner leaves the home)
-
Alcohol Abuse that requires 1 parent and children to leave the home or the alcoholic partner (breadwinner leaves the home)
Who is liable in the event that someone gets ill?
NourishTT complies with all relevant food safety guidelines and assumes responsibility for the food from the point of collection, ensuring it is handled in accordance with food safety legislation. Businesses donating food must ensure that it is fit for human consumption and has been properly stored and handled as per food safety regulations. NourishTT reserves the right to refuse any donation at the point of delivery if it is deemed unsuitable for consumption. This process ensures the highest safety standards while protecting both donors and recipients.
What type of food is on offer and how much food is donated?
NourishTT offers a variety of surplus fresh and long-life food products, ensuring a balanced mix of nutritious options. Donations primarily include dry goods, fresh fruits, and vegetables, though the type and quantity of food vary depending on the contributing business. Whether small or large, every donation helps provide essential meals to those in need while reducing food waste.
What is the difference between best before / sell-by and use-by dates?
It is important to understand the difference between 'best before'/'sell by' dates and 'use by' dates. 'Use by' dates indicate when food must be consumed for health and safety reasons—food should not be eaten after this date. In contrast, 'best before' and 'sell by' dates refer to quality rather than safety; food may still be safe to eat after these dates but could lose some freshness or texture.
At NourishTT, we do not accept products past their 'use by' dates. However, we will accept products near or past their 'best before' or 'sell by' dates, provided the supplier confirms they are still fit for human consumption.
Do we grow our Vegetables and chickens for meat and eggs?
Yes, we do! To expand our impact and feed more families, we have adopted a sustainable approach by growing our own vegetables and raising chickens for meat and eggs. This allows us to provide fresh, nutritious food while reducing costs and ensuring a reliable food source for those in need.
Are our chickens Halal?
No, our chickens and eggs are not Halal. However, we adhere to all relevant processing guidelines to ensure quality and safety. For our Muslim families, whom we proudly support, we source Halal-certified chicken and eggs from Khan's Poultry & Meats to meet their dietary needs.
Does NourishTT Store food?
No, NourishTT does not store food. We order food based on our monthly distribution list to ensure freshness and efficiency. Any excess food is used to prepare nutritious meals for the homeless, minimizing waste while maximizing impact.
